About Downtown

Downtown San Diego is the hub of business, finance and culture in the San Diego County and offers its residents the downtown life. The city of San Diego was initially focused at the Old Town area in early years of growth. Early founders believed that a location near the bay would be beneficial for trade and growth. In 1867, Alonzo Horton a real estate developer brought the land now known as downtown area and vigorously sold it away to businesses. This area then known by San Diego residents as ‘New Town’ rapidly developed. Over the years it saw buildings, a harbor, a pier and more. Post 1985, it saw a further round of focused development by the city with the Petco Park and the San Diego convention center among many other buildings. Today downtown San Diego comprises of nine key districts namely Columbia, Core, Cortez Hill, East Village, the Gaslamp quarter, Little Italy, Marina, Horton District and the Seaport Village. Homebuyers in downtown have options of buying immaculate condos, penthouses and town homes across many of these districts. Downtown harbors key government buildings as well, including the US courthouse and the USPS office. Other key buildings include the Balboa theatre built in 1924, with a seating capacity of 1600, a key landmark in downtown. The Petco park stands as the official home park for the San Diego Padres and a host to major events ranging from Comic Con international to more.
