About Hillcrest

illcrest is one of the older neighborhoods of San Diego known for its architecturally beautiful craftsman style, mid-century homes and diversity of residents. Originally inhabited by the Kumeyaay Indians, with the Spanish influx, Hillcrest saw urbanization. In 1870, Mary Kearney obtained a deed from the city eventually establishing Hillcrest. Initially Hillcrest was known as suburban shopping area for downtown San Diego. As real estate developed and the community grew, Hillcrest welcomed diversity and today has an active LGBT community (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) as part of its residents. The richness and diversity makes it one of the most popular neighborhoods in San Diego. The Hillcrest sign was originally erected in 1940 and the neon sign stands as a historic landmark in the hub of the city. Hillcrest is a walk friendly neighborhood with broad sidewalks for those who prefer to walk to shops, restaurants and more at key locations. It is in close proximity to neighbors Bankers Hill, Mission Hills, University Heights and North Park.
