Adjacent to Normal Heights, Hillcrest and North Park lies University Heights. Founded in 1888, the name ‘University’ came from an original plan to have a part of the University of Southern California in the area. The plan however fell through but the name nevertheless remains strong. The San Diego State University is however a few miles away. At the heart of University Heights lies Adams Avenue a popular area close to North Park and Kensington as well, known for its many homes and amenities. The Trolley Barn Park at University Heights is a popular park amongst families and residents. Originally in the 1900s the park was the place of a large Trolley Car Barn with numerous trolley undergoing minor repairs and maintenance. As trolleys became a thing of the past in 1949, the area was developed into the attractive Trolley Barn Park. Around the neighborhood, homeowners and visitors often view Ostrich signs and imagery. These are in memory of a historic Ostrich Farm in University Heights, which was moved from Coronado to the area in 1904. The farm offered Ostrich rides to the brave and had several visitors. Ostrich feathers were a popular novelty in that era with their usage for stoles, hats and more. The Shirley Ann Place in University Heights is a historic area preserved for its Spanish colonial revival bungalows. University Heights has a range of restaurants such as the El Zarappe, Adams Grill and Bourbon Street. Its proximity to Hillcrest and North Park broadens the options available to homebuyers. The San Diego Unified School district serves the city. Buying a home in University Heights offers residents’ diverse avenues, a central location and multiple amenities.
