About La Mesa
The city of La Mesa was incorporated in 1912. La Mesa in Spanish stands for ‘table or plateau’ and historically was part of a larger tract of Spanish missionaries in the earlier years. La Mesa includes the reputed Grossmont neighborhood. Grossmont was named after William Gross and Ed Fletcher who purchased the land in 1902 and named a mountain on the land Grossmont. The neighborhood was developed by the two as a quaint artists colony.
