North Park is a San Diego neighborhood known for its intrinsic charm and diverse architectural styles. In an interesting historic story, a merchant Joseph Nash sold 40 acres of land to James Monroe Hartley who was passionate about growing a lemon grove. Due to irrigation challenges the Hartley family’s lemon grove never fully developed. Hartley called this land as Hartley’s North Park and that’s where the name has evolved. Renowned designers and architects built many of North’s park architecturally enamoring homes, predominantly Craftsman style bungalows. For instance, David Owen Dryden one of San Diego’s renowned architects is attributed with multiple craftsman style homes in North Park and Balboa Park. In fact, an area in North Park is named after him as the Dryden Historic District, North Park. Homebuyers cherish these homes and in some instances upgrade them, yet preserving their historic designed elements such as fireplaces, doors and more.
