About El Cajon

El Cajon, which forms a key part of East County San Diego, was formally incorporated as a city in 1912. In the 1800s, El Cajon was a hub of traffic between Julian and other cities due to the gold rush. A key contributor to the development of the city was a prominent personality called Amaziah Knox. He led the construction of El Cajon’s first commercial building, a hotel for the busy gold rush travellers. The remains of the hotel are preserved today as the Knox House museum at El Cajon. Nestled between mountains the city of El Cajon is warmly called the “Big Box” by its residents, as El Cajon in Spanish stands for ‘Big Box.’
