Imperial Beach nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the San Diego Bay is a city of splendid views. It is often cited as a classic southern California town with a warm atmosphere. Founded in 1887, it was originally a town for farmers and landowners of inland Imperial Valley. It was known for the Army and Navy presence during World War I and II and still continues to be a key Naval base and training area.

Initiated in 1980, the event attracted more than 300,000 visitors in some years. The city is served by the South Union Bay school district.
