National City

About National City

National City is the second oldest city of San Diego, incorporated in 1887. The city was part of the vast land of the Kumeyaay Indians in the early years. The Spaniards named the original area of National City as the “Ranch of the Kings”. In the later years, the Mexicans came to name it ‘Rancho de la Nacion’ or Ranch of the Nation as this was a place where the royal horses use to roam. The Ranch of the Nation was finally incorporated as National City. The Sweetwater River runs from the Kumeyaay Mountain through National City and gives it abundant flora and fauna across its path. Part of National City’s heritage is preserved in the National City depot railroad museum. The San Diego Electric Railway association operates the museum for residents and visitors. The charming Santa Fe station here was the first start of rail travel in the San Diego area and still stands well maintained in its original position as a historic site.
